WHO ARE WE?

The Royal British Legion (TRBL) is a registered charity in the UK (No. 219279) which provides financial social and emotional support to millions who have either served or are presently serving in the Armed Forces, and their dependents. Currently, over 9 million people are eligible for support and the RBL receives thousands of calls for help every year. The Legion, as it is fondly referred as, was founded in 1921 as a voice for the ex-Service community and in the region of 225,000 members worldwide continue to ensure that this voice does not go unheard.

Although the needs of ex-Service personnel have changed over the years, the Legion is still there to safeguard their welfare, interests and memory. The British Armed Forces are in action around the world every day of the year safe in the knowledge that if they need any support - now or in the future - the Legion is always on active duty for them.

The annual Poppy Appeal is central to the RBL's fundraising activities and raises OVER £50 million every year

WHAT DO WE DO?

The Legion fights nearly 36,000 ongoing Disablement Pension cases for war veterans and makes around 300,000 welfare and friendship visits every year. The Legion's objectives include promoting the welfare of ex-Servicemen and women and their descendants and relieving hardship to them where it exists; raising and distributing money for these purposes assisting serving men and women in their return to civilian life; promoting the interests of their dependents while they themselves are serving.

Within its Royal Charter, the Legion provides help to all the categories above regardless of whether they are its members. We provide welfare services, campaign on a range of issues affecting Service personnel, are the Nation's custodians of Remembrance, raise funds through the annual Poppy Appeal and are one of the UK's largest membership organisations.
The RBL relies on a wide range of volunteers, helpers and employees to care for those who have given service to their country, often in difficult and testing times.

WHAT DOES ROYAL CHARTER MEAN?

A Royal Charter is a prestigious formal document, granted and issued by the sovereign on the advice of the Privy Council; Royal Charters have a history dating back to the 13th century.

Their original purpose was to create public or private corporations (including town and cities), new Charters and are normally reserved for bodies that will work in the public interest (such as professional institutions and charities) and which can demonstrate pre-eminence, stability and performance in their particular field.

The Legion received its Royal Charter in 1925. Click the image to view the charter.

KYRENIA BRANCH No. 3651

The Kyrenia Branch of the Royal British Legion was formed on 1st October 2011 and currently has a strong membership base.

After making formal applications to the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC) Government during 2010, permission was duly given to open a British Legion Branch in the TRNC, the first of its type, with full charity status to follow in due course. The British Legion Headquarters in London formally approved our application to create the Kyrenia Branch in September, 2011 and a formal launch of the branch followed on 1st October 2011, official charity status in the TRNC followed in July 2012.

The branch is currently registered at the Courtyard Inn, Karakum.

Many Cypriots have served in the Armed Forces including the Cyprus Regiment, and the Committee are particularly pleased that the establishment of the Legion here in North Cyprus has created an opportunity to promote friendship and harmony between ex-servicemen and women of all nationalities, all of whom share a common bond.
